About this project

The City of London is planning to improve and widen the Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street intersection. The project will reconstruct Sunningdale Road between Villagewalk Boulevard to Redford Road, and Richmond Street from Villagewalk Boulevard to Uplands Drive.

The project will upgrade underground infrastructure and construct new in-boulevard bike paths and pedestrian sidewalks. The work includes widening Sunningdale Road from two lanes to four lanes through the intersection and adding additional turning lanes to improve maneuverability.

Construction update

The contractor will be returning to the site in early March 2026 to complete the remaining work. The exact date of return is dependent on weather conditions. The following are details about upcoming work, anticipated milestones, road impacts, and other important information for the 2026 construction season.

This project includes:

  • Construction of new through lanes on Sunningdale Road and turning lanes at the intersection
  • Road reconstruction along Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street
  • Construct new in-boulevard asphalt bike paths and concrete sidewalks
  • Upgrade and replace underground infrastructure, including storm sewers.
  • Construction of new median islands, curb, and gutter
  • Install new street lighting and traffic signals
  • Complete advanced tree removals and install new landscaping

Work to be completed:

  • Reconstructing the roads and adding an additional through and turning vehicle lane
  • Installing new asphalt in the in-boulevard bike paths
  • Installing a new concrete sidewalk, curb, and gutters
  • Installing Intersection Pedestrian Signals (IPS) at the intersection of Sunningdale Road and Meadowlands Way
  • Replacing aging street lighting and traffic signals
  • Removal of temporary asphalt
  • Planting new landscaping in the medians and boulevards
  • Replacing watermains and sewers.
  • Adding new road surface, new sidewalks, pedestrian crossing, and tactile plates to improve accessibility

Anticipated impacts:

Work in your area is anticipated to be completed in August, requiring lane closures along Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street. Lane closures will be staged to ensure traffic movement is maintained throughout the intersection. The southbound lane closures along Richmond Street will result in closing the access to businesses located on the west side of the road, north of Sunningdale Road. The northbound lane closures along Richmond Street will result in closing the entrance to Uplands Drive temporarily to allow for sewer installation. Road closures throughout Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street intersection may be required.
