Construction update

The project team has encountered higher than expected groundwater levels at the site. Additional dewatering is required before underground infrastructure can be installed. A specialist has been hired to complete this work.

While dewatering is underway, there will be less activity on site. Some work such as curbs and sidewalks will continue, but most underground work will pause until early September.

This challenge will affect the overall schedule. The original completion date of November 2025 is no longer possible and the project is now expected to be finished by July 2026.

We understand this delay is disappointing for residents and businesses. The team is working to keep the site in good condition over the winter and to coordinate next year’s work to avoid conflicts with other projects on Sunningdale. We will share another update once details are confirmed.

About this project

The City of London is planning to improve and widen the Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street intersection. The project will reconstruct Sunningdale Road between Villagewalk Boulevard to Redford Road, and Richmond Street from Villagewalk Boulevard to Uplands Drive.

The project will upgrade underground infrastructure, and will construct new in-boulevard bike paths and pedestrian sidewalks. The work includes widening Sunningdale Road from 2-lanes to 4-lanes through the intersection, and adding additional turning lanes to improve maneuverability.

Construction is anticipated to begin in spring 2025, subject to approvals.

This project includes:

  • Construction of new through lanes on Sunningdale Road and turning lanes at the intersection
  • Road reconstruction along Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street
  • Construct new in-boulevard asphalt bike paths and concrete sidewalks
  • Upgrade and replace underground infrastructure, including storm sewers.
  • Construction of new median islands, curb, and gutter
  • Install new street lighting and traffic signals
  • Complete advance tree removals and install new landscaping

Design update:

The centre median on Richmond Street has been shorten to facilitate left turns from Richmond Street to Uplands Drive following construction.

Project status

Work for the Sunningdale Road and Richmond Street Intersection Improvements project will begin on Monday, May 5, 2025 (weather permitting), requiring reduced lanes through 2025.

Construction will be completed in stages to allow the work to progress while maintaining access to businesses and properties within the project limits. The first stage of construction is anticipated to start on the north side of Sunningdale Road and continue to progress to the subsequent stages with lane restrictions in place.
