Adelaide Underpass Community Celebration
When: Saturday, August 9, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Where: McMahen Park (640 Adelaide Street North, beside the underpass)
Join the City of London to celebrate the completion of the Adelaide Underpass — one of London’s most significant infrastructure projects.
Enjoy local food, live entertainment, games, face-painting, historical displays, and more. The McMahen Park wading pool will also be open. Remarks from Mayor Josh Morgan and project partners begin at 11:15 a.m.
The underpass, open to traffic since spring 2024, improves mobility, safety, and connections between nearby neighbourhoods while enhancing access to McMahen Park and local businesses. With finishing touches complete, this event marks the successful delivery of a project that will benefit London for generations to come.
Event Highlights:
Local food and live entertainment
Family-friendly games and face-painting
Historical displays about the area and project
Open wading pool

About the project
The City of London is reconstructing Adelaide Street North from Elias Street to 80m north of McMahen Street, as well as Central Avenue from William Street to Elizabeth Street. The project will add an underpass beneath the CP Rail tracks, as well as nearby intersection improvements and active transportation connections, with wide multi-use paths on both sides of the roadway on Adelaide Street North.
Improvements to this civic boulevard rail crossing will provide improved pedestrian, cyclist, and transit user amenities consistent with Complete Streets principles.
This project will directly improve safety and reliability by eliminating the at-grade crossing, reduce cut-through traffic in nearby neighborhoods and improve active transportation and quality of life. There are also benefits associated with improving emergency service and transit reliability associated with the current at-grade crossing.
We acknowledge with gratitude the financial support provided by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario for the Adelaide Underpass project through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP): Public Transit Stream.

Project Status

Completing active transportation components
Restoration of park amenities

The City of London has consulted with community associations from the Old East Village, Woodfield and Picadilly neighbourhoods throughout the environmental assessment and detailed design stages of the Adelaide Underpass project. We are now looking for community feedback on finishing touches, which will help us finalize the designs in preparation for construction next year.
