Adelaide Street North – CP Grade Separation ("Adelaide Underpass")
Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on LinkedinEmail this link
About the project
The City of London is reconstructing Adelaide Street North from Elias Street to 80m north of McMahen Street, as well as Central Avenue from William Street to Elizabeth Street. The project will add an underpass beneath the CP Rail tracks, as well as nearby intersection improvements and active transportation connections, with wide multi-use paths on both sides of the roadway on Adelaide Street North.
Improvements to this civic boulevard rail crossing will provide improved pedestrian, cyclist, and transit user amenities consistent with Complete Streets principles.
This project will directly improve safety and reliability by eliminating the at-grade crossing, reduce cut-through traffic in nearby neighborhoods and improve active transportation and quality of life. There are also benefits associated with improving emergency service and transit reliability associated with the current at-grade crossing.
The City is planning to maintain two lanes of traffic during most of the construction period through a road detour to the east of Adelaide Street.
This project has received funding commitments from the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario to support 10 transit and transit-supportive projects.

Construction Public Update Meeting recording
The City of London is hosted a virtual public meeting to share an update on planned construction of the Adelaide Street North Underpass project. The presentation was followed by a moderated Q&A session.
Traffic calming
The following map shows traffic calming measures being implemented this year in the surrounding neighbourhoods to address cut-through traffic. This represents a higher investment in traffic calming in response to feedback from the community, and these measures have been placed at strategic locations.
The City of London will continue to monitor traffic and can make adjustments if needed.
McMahen Park horseshoe pit relocation
The McMahen Park horseshoe pits need to be relocated to make room for construction of this project. Horseshoe pits will be relocated to the north end of the park, east of the field house. Plans for the new horseshoe pits have been revised following public comments and input form the users group. The new layout has been reduced from 20 to 10 pits. New trees will also be planted. This project is schedule for Spring of 2022 and is weather dependant. A rendering of the new horseshoe pits is available in the sidebar of this page, in the 'Project Renderings' area.
