About the Adelaide Underpass
Londoners have been making use of the underpass since it opened to general traffic in spring of 2024. Work is also now complete in the adjacent McMahen Park, including new gateway features and landscaping. With these finishing touches now complete, the community celebration marks the successful delivery of one of London’s most significant infrastructure projects, replacing a long-problematic at-grade rail crossing on Adelaide Street North impacted by delays, congestion, and safety concerns for Londoners walking, cycling, riding transit and driving, as well as emergency responders.
On Saturday, August 9, 2025, the City of London celebrated the completion of the Adelaide Underpass at McMahen Park. The community came together to enjoy local food, live entertainment, family-friendly games, face-painting, historical displays, and the open wading pool.

About the project
The City of London is reconstructing Adelaide Street North from Elias Street to 80m north of McMahen Street, as well as Central Avenue from William Street to Elizabeth Street. The project will add an underpass beneath the CP Rail tracks, as well as nearby intersection improvements and active transportation connections, with wide multi-use paths on both sides of the roadway on Adelaide Street North.
Improvements to this civic boulevard rail crossing will provide improved pedestrian, cyclist, and transit user amenities consistent with Complete Streets principles.
This project will directly improve safety and reliability by eliminating the at-grade crossing, reduce cut-through traffic in nearby neighborhoods and improve active transportation and quality of life. There are also benefits associated with improving emergency service and transit reliability associated with the current at-grade crossing.
We acknowledge with gratitude the financial support provided by the Government of Canada and the Province of Ontario for the Adelaide Underpass project through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program (ICIP): Public Transit Stream.

Completing active transportation components
Restoration of park amenities
