New sidewalks on Eden Avenue
Consultation has concluded.
About this project
The City of London is committed to providing safe, convenient, and accessible mobility choices for all residents. As part of this commitment, new sidewalks are added each year on streets that currently lack them, to bolster connectivity and provide more mobility options. The City of London has identified Eden Avenue as a street where new sidewalks can add value, and plans to install them in 2023.
Earlier this year City of London informed the neighbourhood that land surveyors would be collecting information in the area for a future sidewalk construction project on Eden Avenue. After reviewing the survey, staff have completed an assessment to determine which side of the street is best for the sidewalk and identified the north side as the preferred location.
The assessment looked at a range of factors, including walking connectivity, pedestrian comfort, street lighting, grading, and potential impacts to trees, utilities, and driveways. Two design options have been developed for the north side – one in which the sidewalk touches the curb, and one in which the sidewalk is set back with a grass boulevard between the curb and sidewalk. A more detailed description of impacts for each option is provided below.
Which option do you prefer?

The input we receive from Eden Avenue residents and property owners will be used to determine sidewalk location and will be shared with you ahead of construction planned for summer of 2023.
Table 1: New sidewalk design options for Eden Avenue
The following table highlights the differences between the two options on the north side. Both options have no impacts on trees and limited drainage impacts.
Sidewalk location | 1.8 m curb-face sidewalk on north side (Next to the curb) | 1.5 m boulevard sidewalk on north side Set back 0.9 m from the curb |
Example | ||
Advantages | Less impact to driveway length and slopes | Further from road and a more comfortable walking experience Provides more space for snow storage in the winter and garbage and recycling containers on collection day |
Drawbacks | Closer to road and a less comfortable walking experience Sidewalk has more up and down at driveways Snow storage in winter and recycling containers on collection day are on sidewalk | Greater driveway slope impacts; slopes are still within allowable standards More impact to available driveway length |
Placing a sidewalk on the south boulevard (odd numbered houses) was evaluated, and it was determined that the driveway and lawn slopes, underground infrastructure, and location of the hydro poles prevent the south side from being a viable solution.
