The Byron Gravel Pits is a unique area within London, characterized by dramatic topography and a central pond that has been shaped by years of aggregate extraction.

The City of London has prepared a Secondary Plan for the Byron Gravel Pits to guide future development within and around the former gravel pit as rehabilitation of the lands is completed. The Secondary Plan was adopted by Council on April 23.

What is a Secondary Plan?

Secondary Plans form part of the Official Plan and provide more specific policies to guide growth and change for a particular area than the those contained with the existing Official Plan. They allow for a comprehensive study and a coordinated planning approach for the secondary plan area to provide more detailed policy guidance that goes beyond the general policies of the Official Plan. No development is currently proposed, the Secondary Plan will provide direction for the review of future development applications.

This secondary planning process undertook a comprehensive review of the lands and establish a vision for this unique area that focuses on both open space and recreational opportunities that the site provides, as well as the integration of urban development that could occur along the perimeter of the former gravel pit operations.
